GovSpot.com Announces
2001 "Government Site of the Year" Award

NYC.gov Receives Top Honors

EVANSTON, Ill. (March 6, 2001) - GovSpot.com (http://www.govspot.com), a high-utility, non-partisan government and civic information portal, today announced that NYC.gov (http://www.nyc.gov), published by the City of New York, has been selected "Government Site of the Year" for 2001.

GovSpot.com judges were impressed with NYC.gov's cohesive content and design, which make it easy to navigate city agencies and services. In addition to traditional e-government services, NYC.gov offers residents the opportunity to request immunization records and apply for birth or death certificates. Site visitors can also read a restaurant's health inspection report, explore the subway system and watch traffic cams.

"New York City makes excellent use of its site to communicate fresh, up-to-date information to residents and visitors," said GovSpot.com editor Lauren Zollinger. "NYC.gov provides a single point of online access to a broad range of agencies and services."

During the weeks following the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center, NYC.gov offered citizens valuable emergency information. At one point, the site was converted to a text-only format to accommodate heavy traffic. Months later, NYC.gov remains an important resource for "the city that never sleeps."

Finalists were selected from GovSpot.com Site of the Month winners and judged on quality and richness of information, overall organization and accessibility. Judges also considered the regularity of updates and innovative use of technology in bringing government services online.

To be considered for the monthly award, local or state government initiatives must demonstrate innovative use of technology. GovSpot.com editors look for sites that save citizens time, make efficient use of taxpayer dollars and improve access to government information.
